Suzanne James, a resident of The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT, has been recognized by the Delaware-Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for outstanding lay ministry. She was among 14 individuals and groups honored at the 2018 Celebrate Ministry Awards Program held at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster on April 15.
James was honored with a Social Ministry Organization Award for her volunteerism since becoming a resident of the new senior living community soon after it opened in 2016. She used her skills as a facilitator to lead several sessions with residents and staff to establish the framework for a Residents Association and to lay the groundwork for the election of the first Residents Association Council. At fellow residents’ request, she served as interim Resident Association Council President until the first open election took place. As one administrator put it, James was the “glue” for the first year as MILLER’S GRANT filled up and the relationship between residents and the administration began to develop.
Now a member of the Spiritual Life Committee, she leads the caregivers half of the Parkinson’s Support Group and is a trusted advisor to Chaplain Stacey Brady on the Mutual Ministry Team. James champions inclusivity and sensitivity, and opens her home to anyone for a cup of tea.
“Her spirit is a gift from God, and I am grateful she so willingly shares it,” says Chaplain Stacey. “Being a guest at Suzanne’s kitchen table is sacramental – it is a place where God’s love is tangible. The kindness, hospitality and generosity that is shared is as palpable as the tea which is served.”
